LETTER

Seven months of the year are just about over and Downers Grove VIllage residents are still awaiting the State of the Village that has yet to occur.  Is there a particular reason why we have not yet had a report?  I believe that it is necessary for you to provide this annual report to the residents consistently each year by accurately and verbally stating the true condition of our town, as well as providing the opportunity for citizen questions and comments.

Now you are considering changing the fiscal year.  We taxpayers are more concerned with your attention to fiscal responsibility and how our tax dollars are spent and the communication of such, rather than the date it occurs.  Deficit spending is a real and valid concern to many of us, who keep watch while y ou seven people increase spending, increase taxes in every possible area adn continuously plan and not plan to rebuild our Village into a new cit with no money available.

The public realizes that high taxes are counterproductive to economic growth, but does this Village Council realize that?

Tonight you will be voting for more funds to be spent on sidewalks and bikeways.  What happened to the grant money of $100,000 this Village applied for and received nearly 10 years ago to be applied to a bikeway?  For those who don't remember, I will tell you.  It was misappropriated for a traffic light that backs up more traffic on Main Street north of the tracks.

Whether you call it taxes or grants, it is our money.

Rather than coming up with new and old ways to spend our money, how about let's concentrate on balancing the budget FIRST and maintaining what you have already built and are responsible to keep up for the citizens, like our entire infrastructure of roads and sewers.

Let's get back to the basics of elementary math.  Don't spend money you don't have.  We don't want your empire in the making.

We want the State of the Village report each year on time.
